  • AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) includes tools and strategies that support communication for children and adults who have difficulty speaking. This may include low-tech and high-tech options, such as:

    • Speech-generating devices (SGDs)

    • Eye-gaze–controlled systems

    • Picture symbols and icon-based communication

    • Sign language or key word signing

    • Visual supports, including schedules and choice boards

    AAC supports functional communication, participation, and independence in everyday life.

  • Speech-language services include both evaluation and treatment for communication needs across the lifespan, from infancy through adulthood. Support may address speech clarity, language comprehension and expression, social communication, voice and fluency, feeding and swallowing, cognitive-communication skills, literacy-related language skills, Gestalt Language Processing (GLP), and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), among other areas, based on individual needs.
